Northwest Inn Slave Lake, AB: Discover Alberta's Jewel of the North

Looking for an unforgettable travel destination? Consider Slave Lake, Alberta: The Jewel of the North. Situated just over 3 hours North-Northwest of Edmonton, Slave Lake is waiting to be discovered!

Slave Lake’s Founding History

In 1799 European explorer David Thompson arrived in Slave Lake. Within a short time after Thompson’s inaugural visit, five fur-trading posts were set up due to the abundance of available pelts. The Hudson Bay Company established a post that was subsequently taken over by the Northwest Company. Slave Lake, more formally known as Lesser Slave Lake, takes its name based upon its northern counterpart, the Great Slave Lake, located in the Northwest Territories.

In 1994 Slave Lake was the proud host of the Arctic Winter Games, and it is the hometown of former Canadian senator Walter Patrick Twinn. Today, Slave Lake is home to over 7,000 hardworking Albertans.

Long Summer Evenings

Visitors to Slave Lake can experience a number of attractions at any time of the year. During the summer, when extended daylight allows for more outdoor play, fishing, swimming, kayaking and other water sports can be found in the surrounding vicinity. For fun out of the water, try one of Slave Lake’s hiking or horseback riding trails. In Slave Lake, Alberta, you’ll find a myriad of ways to leave the hustle and bustle of the city, and get up close and personal with nature. Weekend warriors, seasoned ornithologists, and those who like the adrenaline of outdoor sports and leisure; come to Slave Lake, Alberta.

Northern Lights Shine Bright

Have your eyes ever witnessed the unspeakable beauty of the Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis? Dazzling ribbons of sea foam green, dancing hues of pink, and endless shimmering fill the dark and crisp winter sky. This is the image of the Canadian North for many travellers. Please remember to bring appropriate winter clothing when visiting Slave Lake, and don’t forget to bring extra camera batteries.
